23 “Zero Pollution” beaches in Algarve

Every year the Portuguese environmentalist organization ZERO – Sustainable Earth System Association, distinguishes with the seal Zero Pollution the beaches with the best water quality in the country..

This year there were 58 beaches distinguished on a national level – 23 of them in Algarve, spread throughout the region. Albufeira and Aljezur were the counties with the largest number of beaches awarded, winning five “Zero Pollution” seals each.

In Albufeira, the five distinguished beaches are: Castelo, Coelha, Evaristo, Falésia Alfamar and Manuel Lourenço. The beaches of Aljezur are: Amoreira-Mar, Arrifana, Bordeira, Monte Clérigo and Vale Figueiras.

Tavira is also on the list, with four beaches: Barril, Cabanas-Mar, Ilha de Tavira and Terra Estreita. And Faro, just like Vila do Bispo, has 3 awarded beaches. Other counties in the region to also receive the distinction were Loulé and Olhão – this last with the beach Armona-Mar.

A ZERO Pollution beach is one where it hasn’t been detected any microbiological contamination as a result of analysis made to the water, during the three last bathing seasons. Algarve proves once more why its beaches are one of its greatest assets, distinguished for their beauty and safety. These awards and recognitions are a result of the region’s great effort to improve their sustainability and nature preservation policies and actions.
