AUGUST EVENTS CALENDAR

The much-loved month of August is coming. And it will be a month of August as it has not been seen for a long time – with fairs and markets, popular and themed festivals, concerts and theater, dance and exhibitions, everything to make your holiday even more lively.

As usual, here is our selection of the best events that will take place in the Algarve during the next month – take note of what you really don’t want to miss.

The month begins with the one that, according to the organization, is the “largest gastronomic event in the Algarve” – the Sardine Festival, in Portimão, from 3 to 7 August. The city is filled with life again thanks to the smell and taste of grilled sardines, crafts, sweets, animation and, of course, music: João Leote with Marisa Liz (day 3), David Fonseca (4), Bárbara Tinoco (5), Wet Bed Gang (6) and David Carreira (7). To open the appetite, on the eve of the opening of the event – day 2 at 09:00 – the Museum of Portimão recreates the traditional discharge of sardines, on the pier next to the old bridge, followed by a popular sardine. If you are a painting lover, you will like to know that the Ukrainian painter Roman Markov returns in August to the Art Gallery Painter Samora Barros, after having exhibited there in 2020. Recognized already for its improved technique, especially in oil canvases, in this exhibition the painter offers the public with serenos clippings of Albufeira, where he scores the built heritage. It can be seen from August 4 to 30, Monday to Saturday, from 9h30 to 12h30 and from 13h30 to 17h30. The Gallery is closed on Sundays and public holidays.

And because music is one of the arts that unites us the most, in addition to the highlights above, there is still much more to highlight. The big summer concertsare back at Jardim Pescador Olhanense. Between the 10th and 13th, big national and international names take the stage, in shows that start at 22h30, always with free admission. See all the names here. In Lagosyou can watch the Lagos World Music Fest, a festival that aims to celebrate the cultural diversity of what is heard around the world. It takes place in Praça do Infante from 5 to 14 August and has free entrance. Musical highlight still for the Summer in Tavira, that returns to the Parque do Palácio da Galeria, one of the main stages of the event, where it will be possible to attend concerts of The Gift (August 3), the Algarve composer, singer and producer Diogo Piçarra (11) and another born and raised in the Algarve, great name of the Portuguese music: Dino D’Santiago (17). As there is music for all tastes in the Algarve, on August 12 you can enjoy watching the opera night at the Cultural Centre of Lagos.

The themed festivals are undoubtedly one of the summer events that most tourists and residents attract, being events that delight all ages. TheMedieval Fair of Silves returns from 10 to 20 August, with 11 days of historical recreation of the medieval period of the former capital of the Kingdom of the Algarve. A journey in time that invites you to experience «A day in history», with tournaments and shows in the castle, fixed and itinerant animation, medieval tascas, a Berber camp with exotic products, among other attractions. Shortly after, another travel in time not to be missed: Castro Marim‘s biggest event – the Medieval Days, which, from 24 to 28 August, enliven the Algarve village with the exhibition of arts and crafts, trade, theatrical and musical performances and banquets. Three great artists, authors and interpreters of Portuguese music and culture gather on the stage of the Teatro das Figuras, in Faro, on August 18 and 19. A different and unexpected concert, born from an uncommitted and casual conversation, in a Whatsapp group. Like the routine of their holiday together for several years in the Algarve, the idea is to recreate a more intimate moment, around a table, between food and drink, where conversation and music flow in a natural and improvised way. And so comes “Mais à Larga“, on the stage of the Teatro das Figuras, without script, nor alignment, assuming a totally informal record and the promise of a handful of songs, improvisation, lots of entertainment and good will. But undoubtedly the highlight of the month goes to the Craft Fair, Tourism, Agriculture, Commerce and Industry of Lagoa – FATACIL. After a heartfelt absence, the largest fair in the South is back. FATACIL returns to the Municipal Park of Fairs and Exhibitions in Lagoa, between 19 and 28 August.
